This time they're only informing us of the options available that will allow us to make certain choices. I imagine that a trip to the geneticist in the future may involve choosing hair color, eye color and basically making customized human beings. But I digress--I do love science fiction.
He interviewed us about our family's health histories and conditions while he drew an interesting little tree diagram. I think that watching him draw the tree diagram was probably the most interesting part of this consultation. That and he was funny. Also, peace of mind--I got POM out of the consultation.
We decided to not go through any of the tests offered to Amy that may determine if Max is going to be anything other than normal. It's pointless really. No test results will change our decision to see Max in six months. Max'll be welcomed, loved and met with many waiting open arms that can't wait to meet him/her. In fact, I don't think I want to know the gender either. I heard that the most accurate gender detection method was childbirth, so I'll use that system.
If we get blue things and Max is a she, then she'll love blue things...
If we get pink things and Max is a he, then we'll make sure that he's secure in his masculinity. I've seen big burly men wear pink shirts--it can happen.
The geneticist didn't raise any red flags and we're still on T-6m till lift-off, er... touchdown--one of those. Nevertheless, these are very interesting people to talk to as the science of genetics is mostly in its infancy. I suppose that if I had to customize anything on this child--if I had the option--would be to make sure that the child grows up to be kind, generous and have a sense of humor. These are the traits I've seen in the people that I've grown to respect and admire.
After some crass jokes and some chuckles, we shook hands and thanked the specialist for his time. Amy and I walked out of his office secure in the decision that Max is happily on the way.
